Laboratory Director
Jean-Philippe Weber studied chemistry at Laval University where he completed
a Ph.D. in molecular spectroscopy in 1973. He went on to a postdoctoral
fellowship in environmental sciences at Université du Québec à Montreal.
He was hired as a chemist in charge of metal analysis at the Quebec Center
for Toxicology in 1974, where he helped develop analytical methods and
applications for worker monitoring programs and epidemiological studies.
In 1979, he set up an interlaboratory comparison program for heavy metals
in biological environments. The program now has 175 members in 22 countries.
Dr. Weber is currently both assistant director of the Toxicology Center
and laboratory director. He is also an associate professor in Laval University's
Department of Social and Preventive Medicine.
The laboratory he heads-which is recognized worldwide for its expertise
in the analysis of persistent organic pollutants-was selected to conduct

as a reference laboratory by numerous organizations, including CDC, OSHA,
AMAP, and the Institut für Arbeits-Sozial und Umweltmedizin (Erlangen).
Dr. Weber has taken part in a number of missions in West Africa and South
America to develop and improve the analytical performance of laboratories
and set up quality assurance programs. He is the author or co-author of
numerous scientific publications. His professional interests include the
analysis of toxic substances in biological environments and toxicology
quality assurance. He is a member of the Quebec Corporation of Professional
Chemists (Ordre des chimistes du Québec) and is active in a number
of professional associations. He is also the president elect of the Quebec
